At first, I didn’t even realize it was a chain restaurant with multiple locations. My friend who lives in Tracy, California, raved about this place when it first opened there so I was curious to see what it was all about. Even if you are short-handed, though, I think greeting customers should be top priority.Black Bear Diner is a chain restaurant with almost 50 locations in the Western US. I loved my Tri-Tip sandwich and salad, though my husband's chicken noodle soup was mostly just broth, even that not very flavorful. We were brought menus, a server came promptly to take our drink orders and then our food orders, and the food arrived quickly. In Jekyll-and-Hyde fashion, our experience changed. They agreed, but we still expected to wait. I flagged down a server and asked if we could just sit there and talk while we waited. As we were visiting, I noticed a table for ten that was unoccupied. Finally the hostess (who had been helping in the kitchen) came and told us there would be a 30-minute wait for a group our size. We were absolutely ignored for at least 10 minutes-not greeted or even acknowledged. My husband and I arrived first, the others soon after. A few others were waiting when we arrived. We should have realized a lot of people had gone for a late breakfast on the day after Christmas. We went for lunch the day after Christmas, thinking that by going at 11:30 we would beat the crowd. Nice that this place serves breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. The other was a full breakfast that she thought was awesome. One was the chicken fried steak paw, a smaller dinner with soup and sides. It was a very nice dinner and our friends enjoyed theirs, also, ordering full meals for each of them. The turkey was thick and cooked perfectly! I did have to ask for more gravy, though because there was meat, mashed potatoes and stuffing that all needed gravy. The corn muffin was delicious, though it could have been a bit warmer for me. The salad was served crisp and delicious. So this time, my husband and I shared a turkey dinner and added the salad and corn muffin for each of us (at a moderate, additional cost) and for us, it was truly the way to dine there. The time we’d gone before there was so much food we couldn’t eat it all. We have been to Black Bear Diner in another city about a year ago and wanted to try out this location with friends before going to Hale Theater Monday night. We have come to know that the kind of service we receive at a restaurant is a direct reflection on the ownership and management of the place. Will we be bringing our employees to this place for their Christmas breakfast and bonuses? I dug out cash and left it on the counter with the check. We waited at the counter and no one came to take our payment. Finally, we tracked our server down and asked for a check. We gave up and went to the counter to pay. She served the tables around us and never even looked our direction. We waited for our check, but it never came. seriously, it was so dry that it looked like day old bread. Our food was good, except we've never had toast made of dried out bread. We were just ready to leave and go somewhere that takes care of customers when our server finally arrived. Note that the place was not busy and there were other servers there. were seated promptly by a girl on her first day on the job. We want them to have a great experience as I give them their Christmas bonuses. We decided to give it one more chance as we looked for a place to have a Christmas breakfast for my employees. This place has been a constant disappointment.
